
New giant snake at the natural history Museum in Vienna with special guided tours and children’s program
For three months the staff of the NHM Vienna worked on the preparation of an Anaconda, the from 09. March 2019 will be included in your new display case.
Vienna (OTS) – The project was one of the more unusual, the had to edit the Taxidermist inside and taxidermy of the natural history Museum in Vienna in the nick of time: A 4.1-metre-long Anaconda from the Tiergarten Schönbrunn along with their 30 to 40-centimeter the big boys. From 09. March will see the giant snake in the chamber 27 in a newly designed display case.
„The biggest challenge in preparation was to give the snake a uniform Form,“ explains Taxidermist Robert Illek. In a first step, the snake had to be peeled the skin, then the body is made of PU was reconstructed foam, then the skin tanned and the PU-pulled over the Form.
Anacondas are the largest snakes in the world. In South America, this type of water – rich habitats with dense Vegetation, mainly swamps inhabits still waters and slow-flowing rivers. The snake moves on Land is rather sluggish. The brown-green Anaconda eats medium-sized Vertebrates, which attacks you in the water, wraps around and kills. This giant snake is not considered endangered.

The approximately 100 species of the giant snakes are an original, non-poisonous snake group, some of which still have remnants of legs. There are among them very large, but also surprisingly small species, of which two even live in Europe. NHM Vienna zoologist, Dr. Peter Sziemer reported on the Anaconda of the tropical rain forest and on to the carpet Python of the Australian deserts.
