The crux of child care: career obstacles for female Doctors

A current ÖAK survey identified massive Job-barriers for women in medicine. Family planning and childcare were most frequently cited as a career obstacle.

Vienna (OTS) – hospital operator must work with the municipalities and private initiatives together, to provide hospital doctors with a flexible childcare in a sufficient extent. Downtime due to parental leave and part-time for Doctors include a fix in the human resources planning of Hospital requirements. And career models should be designed so that they also come for the Doctors in question. These are some of the claims, the officer for Gender Mainstreaming, and specific professional and career models of Doctors of the Austrian medical chamber, Petra Preiss, on the occasion of the upcoming world women’s day, 8. March sets up. Because even though the medicine is always female, Doctors expect to barriers with discrimination, both in education as well as medical activity, and with a massive Career.

This has also been confirmed by a study recently commissioned by the Austrian chamber of Physicians of Peter Hajek Public Opinion Strategies (online survey of 2,497 Austrian Doctors = 11.3 percent of the population of approximately 22.050 Doctors).

Thus, 33 percent of the Doctors in the Department are working on the one you wanted to specialise initially in 42 percent of family planning was the main reason. The reconciliation of work and family is evaluated with a mean value of 3.2 „very moderate“, as the author of the Study, Alexandra performs Siegl.

Generally speaking, family planning, and child care are by Far the most frequently cited career obstacle: Nearly two-thirds of all Physicians in Austria (61 per cent) see this Parameter as a reason for career accordingly. After that, to little support from supervisors (37 percent), lack of promotion in the regular training in relevant areas of knowledge (32 percent), the preference of men in interesting Jobs or leadership positions (31 percent), as well as the fact that Doctors are generally not aware of what Doctors (30 percent, multiple answers possible).

„Family work is also in doctor’s families still
Women’s work“

The better compatibility of career and family might also be a reason that significantly more hospital doctors in the choice of doctor in the field (61 percent of those who want to work in the future, lower left) tend to be in the checkout area (20 percent). Preiss explains this with another long-known fact which was also corroborated by the current study. Accordingly, 67 percent of the respondents gave medical Doctors, to have the majority of the childcare; conversely, only 6 per cent. Of the Rest, so a quarter of the families, was divided. Preiss: „family-work families is even in Doctor’s still women’s work. So it’s true to the stereotype, according to which the man makes a career during which the woman is seeking those occupational niches that are in accordance with the child care.“

Misogynist behavior is (also) in the medical field, an issue, even if sexual Assaults are the absolute exception: „Most of the time it is dismissive and/or rude comments that are experienced by a majority of the Doctors, or observed,“ says Siegl. Preiss: „We observe here a much greater awareness in recent years, of course, also thanks to the current MeToo debate. Nevertheless, it must be our aim in the future to ensure that Attacks, even if they occur only in verbal ways, as a limit to be exceeded, seen, can not be tolerated under any circumstances.“

The good news is that 62 percent of the respondents are Doctors generally (very) satisfied with their professional activity. Only 3 per cent have not specified in the survey are „satisfied“. Satisfied with established specialist are doctors most (80 percent), and least satisfied with the proportion of moderately to slightly Satisfied: 44 percent) are Doctors-in-training (.
