Government Contracts

Vienna/Papenburg – The joint venture A 1 Lohne Bramsche kicked off the new year with the acquisition of a large project in transportation infrastructures. The Federal Republic of Germany, represented by Die Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, Westphalia Office, commissioned a joint venture consisting of STRABAG AG (50 %) and JOHANN BUNTE Bauunternehmung GmbH & Co. KG (50 %) with the widening of the A1 motorway in Lower Saxony over a distance of around 29.5 km under a so-called function-based construction contract (FBV).

The section, located between the Lohne/Dinklage exit and Bramsche exit, will be widened from two to three lanes in each direction. The approx. EUR 600 million contract also includes structural maintenance over a period of 30 years.

“The widening of the motorway from four to six lanes will eliminate a bottleneck on the busy A1. We are pleased to be able to contribute our expertise as the market leader in German transportation infrastructure construction to this major project,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

“With this contract, we are continuing our long-standing tradition and expertise in the realisation of infrastructure projects of this magnitude,” says Manfred Wendt, management spokesman of JOHANN BUNTE Bauunternehmung, adding, “Thanks to its excellent local knowledge and wealth of experience in motorway construction and civil engineering, BUNTE is in a strong position to accomplish these demanding tasks.”

Works package from STRABAG and JOHANN BUNTE

JOHANN BUNTE will take the technical lead and STRABAG the commercial lead in the joint venture. Construction will start on 1 February 2021 and will be carried out under traffic. Completion of the motorway section is scheduled for mid-2025.

In addition to extensive earthworks and the construction of the carriageways, 14 bridges along the motorway section as well as two overpasses over the motorway must be completely rebuilt. In addition, 18 bridges will be rehabilitated. The joint venture will also perform noise barrier works as well as accompanying landscaping. With the aim of affecting the traffic flow as little as possible, the joint venture will carry out its activities in eight construction phases. In the first five phases, the motorway is to be widened in the direction of Osnabrück (2021 and 2022). Once these works are completed, the next three phases foresee widening and new construction works in the direction of Bremen.
