The Central importance of pathology in personalized precision medicine
Pathologists-lack of threatened modern diagnostics and therapies, and is a threat to the supply
Vienna (OTS) – „no more“, it could mean in a few years, when the health policy is the lack of staff in the pathology as quickly as possible. „Without pathology there is no sound and the mega-trend to precision medicine – are always finer and more individual diagnosis of diseases and no control of the effectiveness of the chosen therapy,“ says Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin Klimpfinger (Kaiser Franz-Josef-Spital, SMZ Süd, Vienna), member of the management Board of the Austrian society for Clinical pathology and molecular pathology (ÖGPath), at a press conference in Vienna.
The modern pathology is becoming more and more complex: The examination of tissue samples under the microscope is still the Basis. „Increasingly specialized molecular biological techniques such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), which brings a new quantum leap in the development to come,“ said ÖGPath-President of Prim. Dr. Christa Freibauer (Landesklinikum Mistelbach-Gänserndorf). „In an operation 400 to 500 genes can be investigated.“ Without NGS target could be targeted therapy, and immune therapy can not be realized.
But the whole pathology-based therapeutic-diagnostic System in Austria is in danger. „The causes of the age structure of today make patholog inside and pathologists, the inadequate young, and the enormous difficulties filling training places“, says Prof. Klimpfinger.
There is today, in Austria, 299 pathologists engaged in the compartment of the primary. „In 10 years, 48 percent of all in Austria today active pathologists will have reached the retirement age,“ said Dr. Peter Niedermoser, pathologist and President of the upper Austrian chamber of Physicians. „These Disposals are not able to be collected with young patholog inside and pathologists, because the Junior staff is present. Already today, it is not possible to occupy the hospitals for the approved training.“
Currently in Austria, 144-approved training, only 37 were filled. In Burgenland was of 3 approved training not only occupied, in Carinthia, a ratio of 6 to 0, in lower Austria, 15 to 6, in upper Austria, 17 to 6, in Salzburg, 6 to 3, in Styria, 36 to 8, in Tirol, 6 to 0, in Vorarlberg, 4 to 2, and in Vienna, were occupied by 51 of the approved training and only 12 points.
The ÖGPath presented a set of measures and catalogue of demands, the Problem of the pathologist in the absence of counteracting.
