Three times the girl power: the curator takes over collective WHW management of the Kunsthalle Wien

Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović from June 2019 to Vienna’s contemporary exhibition hall, responsible+++

Vienna (OTS) – The decision has been made: WHW What, How & for Whom, the curator is responsible for the collective from Zagreb, the members Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović, in the future, the artistic Director of the Kunsthalle Wien. In 1999, WHW founded for 15 years, the gallery Nova in Zagreb. In addition, the collective has curated major international events such as the Istanbul Biennale in 2009.

Statement WHW: „We are excited about the opportunity to be together, the Kunsthalle in Vienna. We are celebrating the 20th anniversary of our cooperation. This is a great Moment for us, to take up the challenge to be one in Vienna and the world so valued and vibrant Institution. We are planning the upcoming activities programmatically, with a close look at Vienna as a place for artists and audience, a place with a unique urban context in the heart of Europe. In view of the geographical situation and the current Situation, we see it as an important responsibility, the use of Institution as a meeting place, where different opinions about the art and the future of society are discussed. We don’t want those rich in the Hand, of which we know, and we will use this public platform as a focal point for the many different aspects of Vienna, Austria, and the world. This requires a joint effort: First of all, with the artists of the city, the Vienna, the partners, but also antagonist of the interior from all Parts of the world. WHW is continuing its joint work. Ana Dević, the fourth member of the collective, will lead in the future, joint projects in Zagreb.

The Selection Process

The interest in the Kunsthalle Wien was and is great: After an international tender received 83 applications, of which more than half of women, or with the participation of women, two-thirds came from abroad and there were a total of twelve Teams were explicitly allowed.

Members of the jury, Dirk Snauwaert (Wiels, Brussels), and Kathrin Rhomberg (art collection of Erste Foundation), Hannah Lessing (Secretary General of the national Fund) and Norbert Kettner (Vienna tourist Board), both of which are represented in the Supervisory Board of the Kunsthalle, as well as Sonja Huber and Irina Nalis-Neuner from the Department of culture and the office of the councillor.
The Jury had their hands full, but in the end the choice was clear and unanimous on the curatorial collective WHW.

WHW What, How & For Whom

For 15 years, WHW leads to the Galeria Nova in Zagreb and curated numerous international exhibitions, including the 11. Istanbul Biennial 2009.
Founded in Zagreb, and Berlin, curators collective WHW (What, How & for Whom What, How & For Whom) in 1999. Three members of the collective – Ivet Ćurlin, Nataša Ilić and Sabina Sabolović – will jointly take over the management of the Kunsthalle Wien.

WHW is responsible for a wide range of productions, exhibitions and publication projects. 2018 WHW launched in Zagreb, a new international study project for emerging artists, which WHW Akademija. By way of derogation from the concept of „conscious citizenship“ to create the project room for the individual to self-determination of the Participants.

What, How and For Whom, the three basic of each organization, concern the planning, conception and implementation of exhibitions as well as art production and distribution, but also the position of artists on the labour market. The same three questions formed the title of WHW’s project, which was implemented in the year 2000 in Zagreb: What, How & For Whom, on the Occasion of the 152. Anniversary of the Communist Manifesto. In consequence, the questions to the working motto and the title of the collective.
