Vienna’s councillor Gaal on women’s day: „solidarity, networking among women and support more important than ever“

Vienna (OTS/RK) – The city of Vienna is fighting to make women visible and equal opportunities. On the occasion of today’s women’s day on 8. March said the town hall correspondence with Vienna’s councillor Kathrin Gaal on the importance of women’s day, and about how the city of Vienna uses for girls and women:

Vienna.at: At 8. In March, we celebrate International women’s day in the town hall. What is the significance of this day?

Councillor Kathrin Gaal: The women’s day at city hall this year, under the Motto ‚100 years of women’s right to vote – Our voice counts.‘ What is today, of course, was a political milestone, for women, has set the course for where we are today. In this sense, it is important that women raise their voice of women be heard.

In 1919, women from all walks of life have fought for permanently their right to vote. Also in 2019, 100 years later, women’s rights and equality again and again and fought for and defended. Solidarity, networking among women and mutual support are more important than ever.

RK: What measures are necessary to support women?

Gaal: women are so well-trained as never before. An important topic of role models. The Hedy Lamarr prize, which was awarded in the previous year, for the first Time by the city of Vienna, innovative women in IT and thus makes it visible. The next Vienna daughter’s day on may 25. April girls can get an insight in different occupations. Girls should know that many opportunities are open!

It is still the case that women are under-represented in boards of Directors. This must change. Important the rate as a means is, for example, in order to bring more women in leadership positions. Quotas make it necessary to take a closer look and discover the good and competent women who are there, and to raise to the top. The city of Vienna is, in this regard, by the way as a role model: 40.5 percent of managers are summarised women (magistrate, KAV and Wiener Stadtwerke).

What is also important: We want the daddy month is no exception, but quite commonplace. For men, it should be, of course, possible to spend this time with your children.

RK: What is the city of Vienna for the Vienna indoor?

Gaal: I think it’s important that women and girls feel at home in Vienna. Therefore, we have to put up with the campaign ‚I am your anchor‘ a visible sign of the fact that sexual harassment and Assaults in our city, no place. The ‚lifeline’action trains the city of Vienna employees to recognize sexual violence in a timely manner and to respond accordingly. Already at the Danube island festival in 2018, the campaign was active, and was extended in the summer, to the Viennese baths. In the year 2019, also employees of the Wiener Linien, will be trained accordingly. The ‚lifeline’campaign will be continued.

It is important to be able to women in an emergency situation as quickly as possible to help. These support the Viennese women’s shelters offer as well as the 24-hours women’s emergency hotline of the city of Vienna. In Vienna, we brought a fifth woman’s house on the way – with 50 additional places for women and children affected by violence.

What for me as a women and housing councillor, is of particular importance: We focus on forms of housing for Single-parent families – for example, in the case of the projects Wolfgang Gasse (Meidling), Käthe-Dorsch-lane (Penzing), and ‚At the hill‘ (Floridsdorf).

RK: What is the women’s day?

Gaal: The women’s day is important – just to make aware that we are entering day-to-day for equal opportunities and equality. As a sign of all women on this international women’s day on the home page today-to find topics.
